*ANCIENT SKIES -- (John Peat x Imperial Impression) Sev. 6” fl. 27” sc. M. 30-35 buds.  These flowers represent the best of crossing my purple lines with Jeff Salter’s purples.  The flowers are large with very heavy substance.  In fact, the garden name for these flowers was “Shells” since they reminded me of three large, hard sea shells painted a dark purple.  The slightly recurved petals are a very rich, saturated royal purple with a lighter watermark and a green throat.  The petals are surrounded with a gold edge.  ‘Imperial Impression’ imparted a richness of color and ‘John Peat’ contributed its gold edging.  The end result is a very important large, imposing purple flower, with wonderful, tall, well branched scapes.
